In this installment of "Better Blogging Tips for Blogger Powered Blogs," we're going to implement two simple and elemental search engine optimization measures; replacing the simple title tag with dynamic title coding, and add meta tags.

First on our agenda, is the title tag. While many pre-made templates are equipped with an improved title tag; this is not always true. In that case, we'll have to modify it ourselves.

Don't forget to "Backup Your Template" prior to making changes to the code!

To do this, we need to click "Edit HTML" within the Dashboard's "Design" tab to access the template code. Once there, find the code in question

<title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title>

and replace it with the "dynamic" title code shown below:

<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == "index"'>
<title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title>
<b:else/>
<title><data:blog.pageName/> | <data:blog.title/></title>
</b:if>

If we really want to blog better and be a better blogger, we should gain some understanding as to the purpose of this code and it's function before we proceed.

The former code consisted solely of the title tag, whereas the the new "dynamic" code supplies instructions, or conditional statements in addition to the title tag. The conditional statements define the title tag's behavior in the browser, depending on the page type on which it is referenced.

And just what does that mean?

BellaTYPE
If the referenced page is an index page, the browser will only display the blog title.

Blogger Themes | BellaTYPE
If not, or if the referenced page is something else, the browser will display the title of the referenced post or page, followed by the title of the blog.

It's not so complicated after all, is it?

Now that we've gained some understanding of the dynamic title code, we are ready "Preview" and "Publish," our blog. (Provided our blog appears normal/unchanged in the preview)

Browse your blog, paying attention to the title bar in your browser to see the dynamic title code in action.

The accessibility of our content by search engines is greatly improved now that our title code is "dynamic." Hooray!

But it's not time to celebrate just yet, we still have one more thing to complete on our agenda: adding meta tags to our blog.

Meta tags provide search engines various information and details specific to a blog or website. The meta tags we are going to add to our blog are description, keywords, and author.

BellaTYPE's meta description utilized by Google Search
Screen capture of BellaTYPE's description as it appears on Google Search, one example of how meta tags can be utilized by search engines

Return to the Dashboard HTML Editor, and look for the dynamic title code we added previously. To find that code again, first look for
</title>
and then
</b:if>

Just after this instance of </b:if>, we are going to paste the meta tag code provided below.*

<meta content='Your description goes here' name='description'/>
<meta content='Your keywords here' name='keywords'/>
<meta content='Your name here' name='author'/>

*The pink text in the above code must be replaced with values specific to your blog.

Your description goes here: Enter the description of your blog here. It is advised that the description be kept relatively short, and sentence form. Avoid using too many keywords in your description as well.
Your keywords here: Replace this text with keywords relative to your blog separated with commas. Limit your keywords to only those that reflect your content, and try not to use more than a handful.
Your name here: Replace with your name, or the name you wish to go by.

Just as we had in done when changing the title tag earlier, after customizing and pasting our meta tag code, "Preview," and "Publish," your blog.

Ta-da! You have now provided your Blogger powered blog with some elementary measures for search engine optimization. You are about to be discovered!

Stay tuned for the next installment in the "Better Blogging Tips for Blogger Powered Blogs" series, where we'll take optimizing your blog's content up one more notch...

It's no secret that Blogger is often likened to WordPress's kid sibling, always depicted as the lesser of the two when it comes to blogging platforms. However, many bloggers utilize Blogger for the entirety of their Blogging needs, or in addition to blogging on other platforms such as WordPress.

While the "Blogger vs. WordPress," debate is one that wages on, it appears neither poses a threat to the other, nor do any "new challengers" pose a threat to their position.

Wherever one might fall on the battlefield of blogging platforms, it's a hard to refute fact the fundamental "pros" of Blogger remain unmatched. I'll provide the base to this claim by listing just a few of those "pros":
  • It's free
  • You can create multiple blogs
  • You can use a custom domain on Blogger
  • Better Google Indexing/potentially better search engine ranking
  • It's easy. With ready made templates and the Template Designer, creating a blog has hardly been any easier
  • You can earn money with your free blog
Now that we've established Blogger as our choice for the best blogging platform, (or chose it as the platform for your new blog at least), stay tuned for the next installment in this series, Better Blogging Tips for Blogger Powered Blogs, covering essential tips for a better Blogger powered blog.

We've Won a 'Stylish Blogger' Award!

Stylish Blogger AwardThe two of us here at BellaTYPE, The Thompson Sisters, were stoked and honored to receive a Stylish Blogger Award, from our friend and fellow Blogger-blogger-designer. the wonderful StarSunflower Studio!

It is an honor, as we are huge fans of StarSunflower Studio. One of very few bloggers slash designers that I relate to on many levels and also have utmost respect for. Respect doesn't always go hand in hand with a sense of kinship. And we totally get that sense from StarSunflower Studio. So StarSunflower Studio, mad props on all your fantastic work, and heartfelt thanks for this,-- our very first award!
 By accepting this award, we agreed to the four "rules" that follow:
  1. Thank and link back the person that awarded it to you
  2. Share 7 things about yourself
  3. Pay it forward to 15 recently discovered great Bloggers
  4. Contact those Bloggers and tell them about their blog award

1. Thank and link back the person that awarded it to you

Thanks again StarSunflower Studio!

Now for those seven things about myself... Or ourselves rather. (Squirm) Time for a team huddle. Bella Jill and Bella Lauren will have to try to divy this odd number evenly between the two of them.

2. Share 7 things about yourself

  1. Lauren - This feels like truth or dare. Truth! Okay... let's see, fact one... I am terribly nearsighted. Well not terribly, I can see fine with contacts. But the box for my contact lenses has a number like -6.75 on the side of it, if that means anything... Every time I go to a new eye doctor, even though I try to break it down to them beforehand just how bad my vision is, their comments of surprise at the severity of my nearsightedness never gets any less mortifying. It's called tact people. I think in the optometry realm, perhaps since only rarely, very rarely does it induce even remote embarrassment, the practice of tact may be a practice that is not very ... well,-- practiced... Sigh. Cry me a river, moving on. Next! (For the record/Disclaimer: Optometrists are no more prone to lack tact than anyone else. I love optometrists.) :P
  2. Jill - I love Victoria Secret. For some reason I love everything in their catalogue.
  3. Lauren - I'm the younger sister. Late twenties oh-rah!
  4. Lauren & Jill - Lauren says, "We really are sisters." "22 months apart," Jill adds.
  5. Jill - I am a "novelhunter." This is a term I coined myself, which is in short; a book enthusiast. I have sort of fallen off the habit as of late, but at one time I was always on the pursuit of books to add to my collection. More recently, it is to share those books that I ardently seek.
  6. Lauren - I love her books.
  7. Jill & Lauren - We know we need to hurry up and blog! We are excited about the many things we have planned to share with you at BellaTYPE. Stay tuned! We also know that this is a cheezy fact, but we've been squirming uncomfortably at the mention of "sharing something" about ourselves, but we did this for you, with love. Besides, Nymphie Bella (Lauren) has put herself on blast already with her other blog and happenings on the web, she is liking her relative anonymity here at BellaTYPE.

3. Pay it forward to 15 recently discovered great Bloggers
Okay, not all of the blogs I list are on the Blogger platform, but they are by definition created by "15 recently discovered great bloggers" (lowercase b) so I didn't think you would mind. These are sites that have my vote. I hope you do take my word on them and at least give them a look.

Also, not all of these blogs seem to be the "awardsy-type," so, even though I will gladly comply with rule number four myself, (contact the 15 Bloggers and tell them about the Stylish Blogger Award I have given them), I will still be their friend if they "break the chain." However, Stylish Blogger Award Winners, you are supposed to follow the four rules stated above if you accept the award as well.

We're not usually the "awardsy-type," either, but sometimes you have to grab the bull by the horns. Strike while the iron is hot. Sh*t or get off the pot. (Okay, now I am just being silly.) Enjoy these websites! Seize the day! Or as Lauren always says, "Give your life a listen and stay tuned."

Also, please note, these blogs I really do like, and are shown in no particular order. Except for Kirk's blog. He's first because, Kirk is cool. There are so many super Bloggers out there but I had to limit myself to these fifteen. Again, enjoy! C'est la vie!
  1. Kirk's Sloppy Mind Noggins
  2. Graphic Identity
  3. Design Juices
  4. Admix Web
  5. The Blogarista
  6. The Link Medic
  7. Elaine Biss
  8. Trudesign's Ruminations Blog
  9. Fonts By Juan Casco
  10. Kwur-tee
  11. Stirred, Straight Up With a Twist
  12. Mama of Three Munchkins!
  13. Luc Devroye's Homepage
  14. Pizcos.net
  15. The Literary Lioness

4. Contact those Bloggers and tell them about their blog award
Thanks for stopping by, feel free to leave a comment below with your thoughts on this post and on the blog's that you've visited. You know, feel free to comment with your own link if you are a "stylish Blogger" too! Unless you are one of those lame-o spammers, I really don't like those sort of links, and then you would not be very stylish either. Well, I am off to pay it forward and notify these fine Bloggers of their award! Cheerio!
